Pam McKinney has a background as a Librarian, and worked as an Information Adviser at the Sheffield Hallam University Learning Centre following the completion of an MSc in Information Management at the then Department of Information Studies. She left in 2005 to join the University of Sheffield as a Learning Developer, working for the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences, a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. Pam's special responsibility was the support and development of the Information Literacy strand of activities, including researching the relationship between Inquiry-based Learning and Information Literacy. She joined the iSchool in 2010 as a part time Lecturer, allowing her to balance work and the demands of a young family.
My main teaching responsibilities are the Undergraduate and Postgraduate modules in Business Intelligence. I am keen to use an inquiry-based pedagogical approach so both modules feature opportunities for students to engage in inquiry both in the classroom and for the assessed work. In the Undergraduate module local business act as clients for small groups of students and propose genuine business intelligence problems for small groups of students to investigate. In the Postgraduate module students engage with a variety of free and paid for business information sources and the focus is expanded to include BI technologies used in large organisations. I also teach on a variety of other Postgraduate modules.
