BA Perspectives for Adela Khor

Adela Khor, post-doctoral research associatle in the Combustion and Incineration Group, recently took part in the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science)Perspectives competition at Norwich. This event formed part of the BA Festival of Science 2006.
Perspectives is 'a poster session with a difference' which is sponsored by the Research Councils in Britain through RCUK. The scheme is about giving young researchers the chance to address and discuss the broader social issues around their work, both how their research might affect society, and how society influences what they do.
The Research Councils are keen to support this scheme as they strongly believe in the importance of encouraging and supporting scientists to engage with the public about their work. As highlighted by the Government's Science & Innovation investment framework, public engagement work is an essential part of developing and supporting the scientific agenda in this country.
By training the finalists in presentation and communication skills, and giving them the chance to articulate their work and surrounding issues at the BA Festival of Science, perspectives not only helps fulfil our science in society aims, but also adds valuable experiences to the researchers' careers.
With thanks to Gillian Rendle, Senior Science in Society Manager, Research Councils UK
