Response of a smart vibration isolator with optimal controlIntroduction

The group has performed extensive research on smart materials and their application in vibration control problems. The main areas of activity have been the use piezoelectric materials, and the development of smart fluid systems.

In smart fluids research, we have developed modelling and control procedures which enable the application of smart dampers to real-world vibration problems. Work to date has included non-dimensional characterisation of fluid flow, dynamic modelling of fluid flow, and implementation of real time control.

In smart solids research, we have developed vibration control systems using active-constrained layer damping.
