What our students say

Thomas Marshall
MSc Semiconductor Photonics and Electronics
" The most enjoyable part of the course was the module on compound semiconductor technology. We spent a number of weeks in the clean rooms, fabricating our own lasers. It's a really fun, if a little fiddly, chance to get some hands on experience working in a semiconductor device lab. Not to mention the inherent coolness of making lasers.
" I like how the course is a sort of half way point between physics and electronic engineering. It's very interesting to see scientific theory put to practial use to make new electronic and photonic devices.
" My project is a good example of the physics and engineering combined. I took spectra from some devices that are made of quantum-dots and a quantum-well to see how the carriers are distributed. This will hopefully be helpful for engineering new broad-band emitting devices for telecomms. The really great thing is that my work will help contribute a little bit to some real research.
" The department has been very supportive during my time on this course. Especially my tutor and the staff at the Centre for III-V Semiconductor Technology. It's a great place to work and everyone is very freindly and understanding.
" I did my BSc in physics at Sheffield as well as my MSc. It's a great place to live. In my time here I've lived in Broomhill, Crookes and Crookesmoor, and wherever you are, you're never far from a good old pub or a nice green park.
" There are plenty of places to eat out, both fancy and greasy. It's also entirely possible to get all your drinking, eating and enterntainment without ever leaving the student union.
" I have enjoyed my time at Sheffield, and on this course in particular, a great deal. In fact, I've enjoyed it so much, I have applied for a PhD place in the department. "
