The Dual Honours Degree in German and History

Berlin

Sheffield is certainly one of the best universities in Britain to take a degree in German and History. Historical studies are an important element in the programme and outlook of the Department of Germanic Studies, with several courses which are either historical or contain a substantial historical ingredient. And our Department of History has an exceptionally strong international and, specifically, German focus, with a total of five academic specialists, including the Nazizeit historian Ian Kershaw, who focus on German topics. If you study Dual Honours German and History in Sheffield, the full range of courses offered by both departments is available to you: you need not follow historical options within German or German options in History. But if you are interested in making the connection, this is the place to be.

Your Dual Honours programme in German and History will also include a full year abroad, which can be spent at university or on workplacement (either as a teaching assistant or in a commercial setting). If you go to a German-speaking university, you can choose one with a strong history department and include history courses among your studies there. If you choose a workplacement you will research a year abroad dissertation which can be on a topic from German history.

Dual Honours German and History is a natural study combination, given the extraordinary impact of Germany on European and world history in the last two centuries. It also produces highly employable graduates, with a combination of knowledge, experience and skills which is in demand in a wide range of modern professions. We welcome candidates for German and History at Sheffield.
