The London 2012 Olympic Games – Volunteering Guidance
The University recognises that the London 2012 Olympic Games offers staff a special opportunity to take part, as a volunteer, in a world class event. To help support both those wishing to get involved in this unique initiative and their line managers, the following information is provided as a guide to best accommodate and balance volunteering opportunities with the needs of the University.

Background – Volunteering for London 2012 Olympic Games
The UK will host the 2012 Olympic Games from 27 July 2012 to 12 August 2012, and the 2012 Paralympic Games from 29 August 2012 to 9 September 2012.
The London 2012 Olympic Games are running a volunteering programme ("Games Maker"), providing 70,000 individuals from the UK with a unique opportunity to volunteer in generalist or specialist roles throughout the games.
The deadline for applications for the Games Maker programme has now passed. However, it has been necessary for the organisers to stagger the selection events due to the volume of applications. Those who have applied to volunteer may be invited to a selection event, which will take place before the end of March 2012.
Following the selection events, it will be decided which applicants will be offered Games Maker roles. Due to the large number of applications, the organisers will not begin to make offers until the end of 2011.
Successful applicants will then be required to attend at least three training sessions prior to the games (from February 2012 – July 2012) which they should be notified of between 3 and 5 weeks in advance.
Volunteers will be required to participate for a minimum of 10 days (excluding training days), or a minimum of 20 days (excluding training days) if they volunteer for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games during Summer 2012.
