A SET TEXT? The King James Bible in Handel's Messiah

For generations of music-lovers, Handel’s oratorio Messiah has made key passages of the King James Bible indelibly memorable. The relationship between the Bible and the words and music of the Messiah is, however, intriguingly
complex.

The programme combined excerpts from this much-loved work with a commentary exploring why particular verses were chosen by Handel’s librettist and why they were set in the form we now know.  This gave a fascinating insight into the way the Bible was read then and now.

Including performances from the Cathedral Songmen and the Cathedral Girls Choir.
