Prepare yourself for a career in human resources
MSc in Human Resource Management
Our programme prepares you for a career in Human Resource Management (HRM). Accredited by CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development), and drawing on the skills of our internationally-renowned Institute of Work Psychology (IWP), our team of leading human resources, organisational behaviour and employment relations experts will introduce you to relevant theoretical debates and help you to gain the practical business skills you will need for the workplace.
You will gain a critical understanding of the role of human resources in modern organisations; this will include studying the strategic importance of HRM (locally, nationally and globally) and the implications of different organisational, financial, political, socio- economic and legal environments for the management of people at work. You will learn about the latest thinking, research and management practices relating to matters such as recruitment, selection and retention, performance management, employee development, consultation and collective bargaining, trade unions, and pay and rewards.
You begin with an induction programme which will enable you to acquire presentation and team-working skills. This is followed by a focus on developing the professional skills and knowledge bases relevant to HRM organisational practice and core sub-disciplines. In the second semester, you will integrate the knowledge and skills you have acquired with a strategic perspective and learn how to develop, implement and manage human resources.
The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the professional body for those who work in the field of HRM (www.cipd.co.uk). The CIPD, which is increasingly recognised by employers outside of the UK, has 135,000 members and many organisations regard membership of the organisation as an essential requirement when hiring staff to fill HR roles. Our students are able to join the CIPD and gain access to its resources during their studies. By completing the programme, students will achieve the CIPD’s Advanced Level Qualification standard and be able to apply for Associate and Chartered levels of CIPD membership, once they have acquired sufficient work experience (http://www.cipd.co.uk/qualifications/)
