Operational and logistical skills for performance improvement and competitive advantage

MSc in Logistics and Supply Chain Management

You’ll study the theory and techniques needed to successfully manage and improve a global and international supply chain. The programme explores operations, supply chain and green logistics management and core sub-disciplines with the option for you to take two additional modules from a range including strategic management, international management, international business strategy or sales and distribution management. You’ll look at the contribution these systems make and will learn about the skill-sets needed to equip future leaders in the low carbon area.

We work very closely with industry, identifying their needs and tailoring our students learning accordingly. Your learning will be informed by industry-sponsored modules including lectures from key industrial partners, case studies and company visits. Assignment tasks are jointly designed – and assessed by – a combination of academics and industry. All students are offered the opportunity of undertaking an industry-based dissertation which enables them to apply their theoretical learning in a real-life scenario. Projects can be with SMEs, private or public sector and provide a route into future employment. Our programme provides excellent networking opportunities and we have close links with the international Entrepreneurs Festival, MADE.

Our programme provides a full module on Green Logistics and Supply Chain Management; the only course in the UK to do so.

You’ll study in a state-of-the-art learning environment in our newly-refurbished building. Class sizes are small and students come from all over the world ensuring an international perspective to your learning.

Six students from the programme will be selected on merit to take part in a fully-funded International Summer School in Optimisation and Decision Support Systems for Supply Chains in Europe. Speakers are drawn from all over Europe and the event includes technical visits to industrial sites. Computational sessions are supported by IBM/ILOG.

Students will be able to benefit from The University of Sheffield’s real strength in logistics and supply chain research. You’ll receive free training in the use of our state-of-the-art Supply Chain Environmental Analysis Tool (SCEnAT www.scenat.com) and access to MRP software developed by our collaborator company 123mrp.net

The programme is currently seeking accreditations from SAP, Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply.

Profile of typical candidate

The programme appeals to students from a many different backgrounds. To succeed and be competitive both today and in the future, managers need to understand how to manage and improve global and international supply chain performance. Green skills have been identified as a major gap by many governments and industry leaders. This programme will give you an important skill-set in an area which is likely to be key for future business and organisational leaders.

Entry specification

Fees

You will need a good degree in any subject (2:1 or higher) or approved professional qualification combined with a desire to learn about principles and practices of management principles and practices. You do not need prior management experience .

IELTS is our preferred test of language. You need an IELTS score of 7, with at least 6 in all the component tests

If you are unable to sit the IELTS, you should take TOEFL. You need iBT 100, with a minimum component score of 23.

Course Fees for 2012/3 are:

  • GBP 9,000 for EU Students
  • GBP 16,500 for non-EU Students

Alumni of the University are entitled to a scholarship of £1000 (reduction in fee charged) if they choose to remain at the University to study for a Masters programme.
