MSc in Management

Looking for a career in management? This programme delivers a broad-based education in the essential knowledge and critical skills you need to help you become a successful manager. The course draws on the knowledge and professional experience of a talented group of academics and combines the latest thinking in management theory with the practical skills that you need on the ground. The programme is designed to enable you to understand complex business markets and management situations and to develop a range of appropriate ways of handling them.

During the first semester, you will study key management functions, including marketing, finance, human resources and operations management. In the second semester, you learn about strategic management, and have a choice of three modules from international management, international business strategy, employee performance management and contemporary Chinese business and management. In addition, you will take a module in research methods and complete a dissertation.

In addition to the above taught modules, you will also benefit from guest speakers from commercial and other organisations and visits to company sites. As well as this, you will also attend workshops on professional development and career management issues.

Our MSc in Management is accredited by the Association of MBAs, providing an objective benchmark of the quality of the course and the student learning experience. Students completing the programme also qualify for the Chartered Management Institute's Advanced Diploma in Management, which means you can work towards the Chartered Manager qualification conferred by the CMI. Please note that the MSc Management programme has been approved and accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing to meet the entry criteria for the Professional Certificate in Marketing.

The Management School’s Business Development team provides access to businesses and managers. This provides students with opportunities to explore the practical application of their management knowledge. The team supplies information on job opportunities throughout the world and provides direct contact with employers interested in recruiting from the School. The School provides a dedicated full-time careers service for postgraduate students which combines advice and guidance with practical workshops such as key skills for interviews. The Careers team also provides career planning workshops and seminars on all aspects of employability including specialist support for international students.

This programme has been approved and accredited by The Chartered Institute of Marketing to meet to entry criteria for the Professional Certificate in Marketing.

Profile of typical candidate

This programme is aimed at recent graduates with a good degree in any subject and who are interested in a career in management. Our MSc Management students have included graduates from engineering, IT, sociology, English studies, history, archaeology, and many other disciplines.

Our dedicated Careers Service based within the School provides excellent support for Masters students and will help you develop the skills you need to progress your career. They are also able to put you in touch with a variety of different employers. Students at the School also have full access to the excellent resources of the University’s central Careers Service.

Entry specification

Fees

You will need a good degree in any subject (2:1 or higher) or approved professional qualification combined with a desire to learn about management principles and practice. You do not need prior management experience.

IELTS is our preferred test of language. You need an IELTS score of 7, with at least 6 in all the component tests.

If you are unable to sit the IELTS, you should take TOEFL. You need iBT 100, with a minimum component score of 23.

Course Fees for 2013-4 are:

  • GBP 9,000 for EU Students
  • GBP 16,500 non-EU Students

Alumni of the University are entitled to a scholarship of £1,000 (reduction in fee charged) if they choose to remain at the University to study for a Masters programme.
