Safak joined the Management School in September 2023. Prior to this, she was a Research Fellow at University of Greenwich, Centre for Research on Employment and Work (CREW) and Public Services International Research Unit (PSIRU). She has also worked as a Lecturer at the University of Manchester, Alliance Manchester Business School. She took research and teaching posts at University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, Uludag University, Turkey and a visiting position at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
Her research has been published in the International Journal of Human Resource Management, Work, Employment and Society and Industrial Relations Journal. She is an external member of Work and Equalities Institute (WEI) at the University of Manchester.

Safak's research interests lie in sociology of work, the changing nature of labour markets and employment relations with a particular focus on precarious work and vulnerable workers. Her research focuses on the labour standards in the global supply chains, working conditions and politics of worker opposition in the global garment industry looking at a supplier country (Turkey) with a focus on collective actions and social movements in their political and social context. One of the current research projects she is working on interrogates the veracity of the circular economy from an environmental, social and labour perspective and focusses upon global waste recycling supply chains and the the labour process that underpins the global recycling industry. Another international research project she is part of has a specific aim to understand the significance of garment industry structure and workforce diversity locally and globally.

Safak enjoys teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students with her international experience in teaching and research. Her approach to teaching is encouraging students to think critically while providing them with an empirical and theoretical understanding of work and employment. She has taught in the areas of management in a critical context, organisations and employment, international human resources management and qualitative research methods in different organisations.
