Industrial Doctorate Centre in Machining Science

The IDC in Machining Science at the University of Sheffield is a joint enterprise between the Faculty of Engineering and the multi-award winning Advanced Manufacturing Institute (which includes the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre with Boeing (AMRC) and the Nuclear AMRC).

The IDC offers approximately five EPSRC/industry joint funded Engineering Doctorate (EngD) studentships each year, with the aim of producing Research Engineers with skills and expertise at the forefront of knowledge in machining science. Our EngD students are part of a vibrant research team committed to helping UK industry develop and maintain a world-leading capability in high value manufacturing sectors that involve machining processes.

All of the projects undertaken by the Centre are industrially sponsored and motivated; with Research Engineers having an industrial mentor as well as an academic supervisor. It is anticipated that a large part of the four year studentship will be spent either working within the sponsoring industrial organisation, or working in partnership with them using the state of the art manufacturing resources within the AMI. Examples of partner industrial organisations include Rolls-Royce, The Boeing Company, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, BAE Systems, and Sandvik Coromant.
