Department open days

We invite all applicants who receive an offer from us to an open day, usually in the period between November and March each year. The open day will give you the opportunity not only to visit the Department of Physics and Astronomy, but also to see the central campus and students' union. We also include a visit to a hall of residence for lunch and you will be able to meet staff and current students. A tour of the facilities within the Department including a visit to one of our research groups, is also included.

We strongly encourage you to attend one of these open days as it will provide you with a clear picture of our Department and provides plenty of opportunities to ask any questions you may have.

Our open days start at 10:45 and finish by 15:15, although the day is slightly longer if you are interested in one of our dual degrees.

University of Sheffield Open House 2012 - October visits

If you are planning to visit the University within the next few weeks as part of the Open House 2012 we would encourage you to also visit our department. We will try to provide a tour where possible but can not always guarantee staff availability.

University Pre-application visit days

The university also arranges pre-application visit days during the summer each year. The day will include talks about the university, the city of Sheffield, and various aspects of student life, and the chance to visit a hall of residence. You can also take a self-guided tour of the central campus to see the students' union, library, and, a little further afield, sports facilities. You will also have the opportunity to visit the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and, subject to availability, you may be able to visit another department which interests you.
