East Asian Studies: Visual Aesthetics in East Asia: The Rise of Cuteness
Event details
Description
This online taster session will give you an insight into what it's like to study East Asian studies at university. You'll have the chance to hear from our East Asian studies academics, participate in a taster lecture and engage with current undergraduates.
Visual Aesthetics in East Asia: The Rise of Cuteness
Cute studies is an emerging academic field that attracts increasing attention in East Asian aesthetics and popular cultures. The 'Aww' factor and the use of the Japanese word kawaii, for example, showcase cuteness as a widely experienced phenomenon.
This talk will use cuteness as an example to examine East Asia from the perspective of visual aesthetics.
Unlike classical philosophical discussions of aesthetics, this talk will depart from everyday life. It will explore how to perceive East Asian aesthetics in daily experiences, how cuteness shapes people’s understanding of East Asia, and how the field of cute studies connects with other academic disciplines.
This session is suitable for students in years 12 and 13.
The lecture helped me learn exactly what the subject consisted of and aided me in understanding further what I wish to study at university.
