The SPERI Doctoral Researchers Network was established in February 2019, to provide an academic and intellectual community for post-graduate researchers in the United Kingdom who are working on questions that relate to political economy, broadly conceived. Political economy is interdisciplinary by its nature, and as such we aim to provide a space for research students across the university to come together and discuss how best to study and understand contemporary capitalism. We also want to provide opportunities for members to develop the intellectual and professional skills needed to become fully fledged political economy scholars working at the cutting edge of the field.

Our events take a variety of shapes including seminars with senior academics, for example on the Political Economy of the Everyday with Dr. Liam Stanley or Interdisciplinarity in IPE with Dr. Andrew Hindmoor and Dr. Hannah Lambie-Mumford, or skill-based workshops on academic writing and publishing in political economy with Professor Colin Hay. Additionally, we host events aimed at demystifying the PhD journey by allowing peers to share their experiences and knowledge on overseas institutional visits, field work, and their progressing academic careers more generally.

Other opportunities include publishing contributions on the SPERI Blog. We published series on Continuity and Change in Social Contestation, the Political Economy of Everyday Life and the Political Economy of Conflict. We also hold networking events such as the workshop “Women in Political Economy (WIPE)” with Dr Alessandra Mezzadri, Dr Merisa Thompson, Dr Ellie Gore and Dr Hannah Schling and the conference “New Voices in Critical Political Economy”.

The current network conveners are Frank Maracchione, Charline Sempéré, Josh White, Vicki Reif-Breitwieser, Nina Lotze and Emma Mahoney. We are always happy to welcome new members from within the University of Sheffield and beyond. If you would like to be included on the mailing list to be informed of upcoming events, please contact one of the conveners or speri@sheffield.ac.uk and join the mailing list via the following link
